Paving Under the Pecans

Asphalt paving in Groves often means working around trees. Around 1919, Wiley Choate supervised the planting of several thousand pecan trees on a 385-acre tract here, and in 1921 the land was divided into a subdivision called Pecan Grove, later shortened to Groves. The post office came in 1927, the school in 1929 and the library in 1930, and the city incorporated in 1952. Many of those pecans still shade yards and driveways today.

Trees and pavement

Pecan roots run wide and shallow, and they lift and crack asphalt over time. Shade keeps some driveways damp and mossy. When we replace a driveway near large trees, we plan the route and edges with the trees in mind, cut roots only where needed and add base where roots and soft ground meet.

Low, flat ground

Most of Groves sits only 5 to 15 feet above sea level. That leaves little room to slope a driveway, so grading has to be precise to move water to the street or ditch.

Older neighborhoods

Groves had 17,304 people in 1960 and 18,067 in 1970, and counted 17,335 in 2020. Much of the housing was built in those postwar decades. Driveways from that era often have thin bases and edges that have broken off. Replacement is common; for sound driveways, seal coating and crack sealing keep them going.

Highways

State Highways 73, 87 and 347 pass through or near Groves. Businesses along them need lots that hold up to traffic and look cared for.

Groves sets its own rules for work at the street, and we check them before scheduling.

Older driveways in postwar neighborhoods

Groves' 1950s and 60s neighborhoods have driveways that are often narrow, thin and patched. When we replace them, we can widen them within your property, rebuild the base and correct the slope so water no longer runs toward the garage. Where pecan roots have lifted sections, we decide with you whether to work around the tree or trim roots.

Hurricane-season prep

Before the wettest months, walk your driveway. Seal open cracks, clear leaves and hulls from drains and the ditch, and note any spots where water stood after the last storm. Fixing those small things in spring keeps a Groves driveway from breaking up after a tropical system dumps several inches in a day.

Planning a Groves job

We walk the driveway with you, note which trees to protect, measure, and check drainage. If roots have lifted the old driveway, we decide together whether to reroute, bridge with extra base or trim roots. The written quote lists removal, base, asphalt and any tree-related work separately.

Costs

National guides list new asphalt driveways at about $5 to $12 or more per square foot. Root work and extra base near trees can add to that. Seal coating is about $1 to $2 per square foot.

Maintenance under trees

Leaves and pecan hulls hold moisture on the surface. Sweeping them off, keeping drains clear and sealing every few years helps a shaded driveway last.

Commercial lots

For shops and churches along the highways, we patch, overlay, seal and restripe, phased so the lot stays open.

Groves Questions

Will you cut the roots under my driveway?

Only where needed and with care for the tree. Sometimes rerouting or adding base is the better option.

Why is my shaded driveway mossy and soft?

Shade keeps it damp. Good drainage and a firm base help, and sealing protects the surface.

Do you work on commercial lots along SH 73?

Yes, from patching to overlays and striping.

How do you handle very flat lots?

With precise grading to the street or ditch and a firm base so small low spots do not become puddles.

Do pecan hulls damage asphalt?

Not directly, but they hold moisture and stain. Keeping the surface clear and sealed helps.

Do you work on driveways near SH 87?

Yes, throughout Groves.

How long does a Groves driveway take?

Usually two to three days, plus any time for root work.

Is an overlay possible over a root-lifted driveway?

Not usually. The lifted sections need to be removed and the roots dealt with first, or the bumps return.
