Paving on the Neches

Asphalt paving in Port Neches means working in a river town with a long history. Port Neches sits on the Neches River about 20 miles inland from the Gulf, on what was called Grigsby's Bluff, one of only two high bluffs on the river south of Beaumont. Confederate troops built Fort Grigsby here in 1862, and a post office operated from 1859 to 1893. Today it is a city of 13,692 people (2020) at about 16 feet of elevation.

Steady growth

Port Neches grew from about 2,300 people in 1930 to 5,448 in 1950, 10,894 in 1970 and 13,944 in 1980, and it has stayed close to that since. Many homes date from the 1950s through the 1970s, and their driveways show it: patched surfaces, sunken edges and cracks that have been sealed over and over.

Plant neighbor

The TPC Group facility, which opened in 1944 as Neches Butane Products, is part of the town's story. On November 27, 2019, explosions there started a fire that burned until December 3 and led to the evacuation of about 60,000 residents across several cities. For local businesses and homes, plant traffic and contractor work are part of daily life, and lots near the plants need durable entrances.

River ground

Near the river, soil can stay wet and soft. Driveways and lots need a firm base and grades that move water off the surface quickly. We check for soft ground before paving.

What we do here

  • Replace older driveways with a rebuilt base
  • Overlay sound but worn driveways and lots
  • Seal coat and crack seal newer pavement
  • Patch potholes and sunken areas
  • Restripe business and church lots

Port Neches runs its own city government, so we check its requirements for work at the street.

What makes a river-town driveway last

Near the Neches, the ground under a driveway is often damp for long stretches after rain. A driveway that lasts here has a thicker compacted stone base than a textbook minimum, a surface that drains toward the street or a ditch rather than toward the house, and edges supported so they do not crumble into wet soil. We build to that standard and explain the base depth in the quote.

Older concrete strips

Some older Port Neches homes still have two concrete wheel strips or a cracked concrete driveway. We remove them and pave a full asphalt driveway on a new base, or tie new asphalt into a sound concrete apron at the street.

Pricing

National guides put new asphalt driveways at about $5 to $12 or more per square foot, overlays at about $3 to $7 for driveway resurfacing, and seal coating at $1 to $2. Removal of old concrete strips or heavy undercutting near the river adds to the total. Everything is itemized.

Working near the plants

For businesses near the industrial areas, we plan deliveries and paving around shift changes and keep at least one entrance open. Heavy-duty sections at entrances and truck lanes are priced separately from car parking.

After the work

Keep cars off new asphalt for a couple of days, longer in summer, and plan the first seal coat three to six months later.
